What is changing in SQE1 from January 2027?

From January 2027, each FLK (FLK1 and FLK2) will have 170 questions instead of 180, split across two sessions of 85 questions each (down from 90). Subjects are now allocated between Session 1 and Session 2, rather than all subjects appearing in both sessions. Ethics and Professional Conduct remains pervasive and can appear in any session. The time per session remains 2h 33m.

How many questions are in SQE1 from January 2027?

From January 2027, each FLK has 170 questions split into two sessions of 85 questions each. The total across both FLKs is 340 questions (down from 360). Each session lasts 2 hours 33 minutes.

Which subjects are in Session 1 and Session 2 of FLK2?

FLK2 Session 1 includes Wills and Administration of Estates, Solicitors Accounts, Equity and Trusts, and Land Law. FLK2 Session 2 includes Property Law and Practice and Criminal Law and Practice. Ethics and Professional Conduct is pervasive and can appear in either session.

Is SQE1 still one exam or two separate exams in 2027?

SQE1 remains a single assessment consisting of FLK1 and FLK2. Each FLK is assessed across two sessions. The sessions are parts of the same assessment, not separate exams. Questions within each session remain mixed and randomised across the allocated subjects.

FLK1 and FLK2 are the assessments. Each FLK consists of Session 1 and Session 2 on the same assessment day. The session allocation tells you which subjects will be tested in each session — it does not create separate exams. Your overall FLK progress remains the primary measure.

Questions remain randomised

The new subject allocation does not mean questions will appear in subject blocks. Within each session, questions from all allocated subjects are fully mixed and randomised. A candidate might see: Business Law → Dispute Resolution → Business Law → Legal Services → Ethics → Dispute Resolution — not blocks of the same subject.
